The Bhootnii Movie Review : A missed attempt at both horror and comedy

Film: The Bhootnii

Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Mouni Roy, Sunny Singh, Palak Tiwari, Aasif Khan, Nickunj Sharma

Director: Sidhaant Sachdev

Rating: 1.5 Moons

The film revolves around a college that is haunted by the ghost of the Virgin Tree. Determined to free their campus from its spooky reputation, students and faculty join hands to bring in a former student — Baba, played by Sanjay Dutt — who is now a renowned ghostbuster. Mouni Roy plays the ghost ‘Mohabbat’ that haunts the college.

Acting

The only person remotely bearable on screen was Aasif Khan, who plays a college student. Sanjay Dutt is saddled with clichéd dialogues and over-the-top monologues that are honestly hard to sit through. Mouni Roy comes off more irritating than eerie. Palak Tiwari is harmless – why was she even there? Sunny Singh suffers from poor comic timing and, unfortunately, Nickunj is simply unbearable to watch.

Direction

Sidhaant Sachdev, despite having Sanjay Dutt on board, couldn’t fully tap into his potential. The film’s weak script and underwhelming screenplay overshadows even the few decent performances. Horror-comedy is a challenging genre that demands sharp writing and direction, but sadly, Sachdev’s execution leaves much to be desired. With better storytelling, the film could have made far more impact.

Dialogues

The only redeeming aspect of the film is a handful of witty dialogues that genuinely manage to make you laugh and most of them delivered by either Sanjay Dutt or Aasif Khan.

Music

From 'Aya Re Baba' to 'Rang Laga', the songs from the film are passable, but none of them leave a lasting impression or have any real recall value.

Overall

It's a film you can skip or watch at your own risk.
