Shrek 5 to anticipate return with original cast Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz & Eddie Murphy, Donkey spinoff teased by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri

The talk of Shrek reboot has been circulating since 2018, when Illumination boss Chris Meledandri spoke about the idea of a new spin on the DreamWorks Animation franchise. However, now, following the success of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish (which was a spinoff and hinted at a return of Shrek near its end), Meledandri is considering to bring back the franchise with Shrek 5, and hopefully with the film’s original cast that includes Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy.

In a recent interview while talking about The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Meledandri said, “It’s not that dissimilar to the process that we went through with ‘Mario,’ where you look at what the core elements are that audiences have loved, and you do your very best to honor those core elements. And then you’re hard at work to build story elements and new characters that take you to brand new places. The original cast is a huge part of that."

He further said, “We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return,” giving an indication that negotiations with actors are going well.

Eddie Murphy, who voiced Donkey in Shrek, said in January in an interview, “If (DreamWorks) ever came with another ‘Shrek,’ I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey. They did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have done a Donkey movie.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.” So, Meledandri has reason to anticipate the reboot.
