Sean Penn, who was in Ukraine to film a documentary on the Russian invasion until now has fled the war-torn country along with his film crew and thousands of refugees. Penn took to Twitter and shared an image of him wearing a backpack and carrying his luggage while walking on the road for miles and joining the exodus of people fleeing the country towards Poland.

He wrote on Twitter, “Myself & two colleagues walked miles to the Polish border after abandoning our car on the side of the road. Almost all the cars in this photo carry women & children only, most without any sign of luggage, and a car their only possession of value.”

The tweet did not explain why the actor and his companions were forced to abandon their vehicles. Before leaving the country, Penn also appeared at a press briefing in Ukraine's capital of Kyiv, where he listened to government officials talk about the crisis. "Already a brutal mistake of lives taken and hearts broken, and if he doesn't relent, I believe Mr. Putin will have made a most horrible mistake for all of humankind," Penn said.

The Office of the Ukraine President issued a statement praising the Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker, noting that the director had come to Kiev to record events that were unfolding in Ukraine "and to tell the world the truth about Russia's invasion of our country". The documentary is a Vice Studios production in association with Vice World News and Endeavor Content. Penn last flew to Ukraine in November 2021. He started preparing for his documentary by visiting with the country's military.
