I'm in: Transgender icon Caitlyn Jenner to run for California Governor

Olympic champion and Kardashian clan member Caitlyn Jenner announced on Friday that she has filed paperwork to run for governor of California, in a bid to become the first transgender American to win such a high-profile post. Caitlyn, an Olympic hero, reality TV personality and longtime Republican, announced “I'm in" on Twitter, joining a growing list of candidates seeking to oust Newsom from office.

“For the past decade, we have seen the glimmer of the Golden State reduced by one-party rule that places politics over progress and special interests over people. Sacramento needs an honest leader with a clear vision,” Caitlyn said in a statement announcing her “Caitlyn for California" candidacy. "I am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom's disastrous time as governor," Caitlyn said in the statement.

"Small businesses have been devastated because of the over-restrictive lockdown (and) an entire generation of children have lost a year of education and have been prevented from going back to school, participating in activities, or socializing with their friends," she said.

California is expected to hold its second-ever recall election sometime this year, as the state's anti-Newsom petition appears on track to secure the necessary number of signatures to trigger a recall vote.
