Ellen DeGeneres, the host of the longest-running television show The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been in the eye of the storm recently for the unethical professional behaviour on the sets. She has received a lot of flak for looking the other way when her show’s producers have misbehaved with employees. Several former employees called Ellen out for the toxic behaviour and treatment meted out to employees which has put her in a tight spot. Now, her wife Portia de Rossi has come out in solidarity with her.
Portia, who has been married to Ellen for 12 years, took to Instagram to share an image carrying text, “I Stand By Ellen”. She wrote, “To all our fans....we see you. The Ellen DeGeneres Show has won multiple Emmy awards and is one of the most popular shows of all time. However, the show as well as the host have been under fire for weeks because of the complaints made by former production staffers who have revealed a hostile workplace that included caustic remarks, racism and bullying by upper management and claims that the comedian is mean-spirited and ‘kind’ only on air.
An internal investigation was conducted by Warner Bros. Television that produces the talk show and said last week that staffing changes and other measures are being taken to ensure a more sustainable work environment and to address the toxic work culture issue. DeGeneres had also issued an email to staff in which she expressed regrets of not being able to extend the show’s happy public face to employees. However, her apology fell on deaf ears and the developments led to the #ReplaceEllen hashtag, which went viral on Monday.
