In his opening monologue at the 2020 Golden Globes, host Ricky Gervais took aim, potshots, attaked and roasted almost everyone associated with Hollywood. His no-holds barred monologue shocked Hollywood’s a-listers as he attacked Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorses, Dame Judi Dench, the giants that are funding the entertainment industry like Apple, Amazon and Netflix. He also took the opportunity to promote his own Netflix series, the black-comedy After Life.
At the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards, no one was off-limits for Gervais as he himself said that since this would be his final time hosting the show, he didn't care who he offended. He started with, “Let's go out with a bang, let's have a laugh at your expense, shall we?" He quipped that while most stars took a limousine to the event, he took a regular cab with a license plate "made by Felicity Huffman" - a jab at Huffman's recent prison stint for her involvement in the college admissions scandal.

Taking jibe at Leonardo’s reputation of dating younger women, he said, “Leonardo DiCaprio attended the premiere of the movie (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), by the end his date was too old for him. Even Prince Andrew was like 'come on man, you're nearly 50,” bringing guffaws from the audience including the actor.
He made a joke about the MeToo movement as well and said that the ballroom was filled with powerful studio executives and that "they are all terrified of Ronan Farrow," before adding, "He’s coming for you." He also made a joke about Martin Scorsese’s short height and his Marvel cinema comment. He said, “Martin Scorsese made the news for his controversial comments about the Marvel franchise. He said they're not real cinema and they remind him about theme parks. I agree. Although I don't know what he's doing hanging around theme parks. He's not big enough to go on the rides. He's tiny. The Irishman was amazing. It was amazing. It was great. Long, but amazing.”

However, his off-colour joke about Dame Judi Dench and the critically slammed film Cats was bleeped out by censors. This was fifth time hosting the Golden Globes, and his presence was a surprising choice for some based on his history of transphobic comments. He first hosted in 2010 and went on to helm the gig in 2011, 2012 and 2014.
