Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1: Insights through the directors David Benioff and D. B. Weiss's eyes will blow your mind

Game of Thrones is back on air with its final and eighth season after 595 days of wait and we as fans cannot stop gushing about it. The first episode premiered on April 14 and folks across the world could sense the chill from the winter! From roaring dragons to missing elephants (well, pun intended) and some pivotal reunions, the episode seemed like a great start to the beginning of the end.

That being said, we bring you insights of episode 1 from the perspective of GOT’s brilliant directors – David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. These two masterminds opened up about the season premiere in a special video segment and we couldn’t be more excited.

The ace duo, D&D shared the fact that the end is just similar to the beginnings. They pointed out a lot of resemblances derived from the Season 1 pilot episode and we feel it was fitting to include those parallels. They also shed light on the character’s developments and changed traits. For instance, Arya reminisces being young and naive, rushing through the queue to see King Robert and Queen Cersei arrive at Winterfell in EP 1 os S1 when she spots a little boy doing the same in EP 1 of S8.

PIVOTAL REUNIONS

The season premiere included strategically placed reunions. Be it Bran waiting for ‘an old friend’, the Arya-Jon emotional hug or Sansa and Tyrion (yet technically married) being now the Lady of the Winterfell and Hand of the Queen. Every character was defined by its own journey, given the circumstances that they met again. Had Tyrion visited Winterfell on its own, they would have certainly met under different circumstances!

FAMILY BONDS

House Stark has always been about honour and sticking to the family and we witnessed some emerging tensions between them due to the arrival of the foreign queen. According to Benioff, Blood is definitely thicker than water when it comes to the Starks. This would be a test of time for the Starks to stand together in thick and thin with so many things in consideration.

THE DRAGON RIDE

Directors said that this was not only a Jon and Daenerys moments but also a subtle indication for Jon (well, he knows nothing!) that only Targaryens can ride a dragon. As we further dove into the scene we saw Dany realizing that her dragons are comfortable around Jon. This scene further planted the idea that dragons will accept him as one of the riders.

BEYOND THE REUNIONS

Well if you thought GOT has just had its reach till reunions and parallels, we are sorry to break that bubble! GOT has the capability to go beyond what meets the eyes or scripts for that matter. D&D managed to bring some characters on the screen that had never met but had a connection or relevance of some sort. A scene where Jorah Mormont gets our beloved Khaleesi to meet Samwell Tarly who cured him is a classic example. They meet on some other note and realize midway of the conversation that they are connected by some horrid reasons as well. (Dany executed Sam’s father and brother). So many things that we knew as an audience which the characters didn’t know!

JON'S PARENTAGE

Let’s be honest, this was a nerve-wracking question right from the beginning of the series. When Jon faced the answer of his life’s biggest question, his parentage, he was taken aback. Weiss said that he was being told something that he knew is true and can’t handle. His world came shattering down as he realized that his father who was not his biological father, Ned stark lied to him to ensure his safety. He was in denial about his identity, his whole life.

Well, episode 1 of the final season was a riot of emotions. We anticipatedly wait what episode 2 will bring!
