Game of Thrones gets a prequel, HBO orders a pilot set in Age of Heroes

This piece of news will cheer the fans of Game of Thrones, as HBO on Friday said that it is moving ahead with a prequel for the popular series. It is the first of the five potential spinoff projects that were being developed. A pilot has been ordered that will be set thousands of years before the events portrayed in the Game of Thrones, and if it is well accepted then a full TV series will be made.

The prequel has not been titled yet and is written by British screenwriter Jane Goldman (who served as a writer for the Kingsman movies, several X-Men films, and Kick-Ass, among other works) with author George RR Martin. Game of Thrones is a hugely popular series around the world which is based on Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Fire. The prequel is ordered keeping in mind the audience’s interest and love for the GOT series. The prequel will illuminate the history of the warring families in the fictional kingdom of Westeros and will also chronicle the “world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes to its darkest hour”.

HBO described the show in a statement, “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.”

The final season of Game of Thrones is scheduled to air in 2019 and already the anticipation among the audience is palpable. The series is hugely popular and have won several Emmy Awards and is HBO’s biggest hit ever. With 30 million viewers in the United States and around the world the series have given rise to a whole load of memes and popular culture anecdotes. The actors from the series have become household names now after appearing in the show. Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Rose Leslie, Jason Mamoa and others have become popular celebrities after appearing in the series.

No specific timescale is given by HBO about when the prequel would air but the executives maintained that no spinoffs will air until a year after the final season of Game of Thrones in 2019. The author of the series George RR Martin had said almost a year ago that he has been working with four other writers on ideas of spinoffs for the show but details were kept under wraps. However, Martin and HBO have maintained that the spinoff might not even be set in Westeros and they would not feature the same characters as Game of Thrones.
