Kevin Spacey’s image comes down like a ‘House of Cards'

One more closet is rattled, the skeletons tumble out, and a big name is rightfully shamed. Kevin Spacey has been accused by actor Anthony Rapp of making unwanted sexual advances towards him in 1986, when he was just 14.

The allegation against Spacey comes in the wake of a New York Times story this month which has detailed at least 40 accusations of sexual misconduct against movie producer Harvey Weinstein. In its wake, other powerful men have also been accused of sexual harassment and misconduct.

Spacey has responded to the allegations, claiming he is “beyond horrified to hear (Rapp's) story.” He adds, “I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behaviour, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.” Spacey adds, “This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.”

Even as he faces criticism for mixing issues – as Ashlee Marie Preston, writer and activist tweeted: “I'm not interested in Kevin Spacey being gay. I'm curious as to why we're conflating sexuality w/ the molestation of a minor. Stay on topic.”- the consequences have already started to roll in. Netflix has announced that it is ending its Emmy-nominated political drama ‘House of Cards’ at the conclusion of its upcoming sixth season. The final episodes of the TV series, which stars Spacey and Robin Wright, will air in 2018. In a statement released by Media Rights Capital and Netflix, who produce ‘House of Cards’, they reveal they are “deeply troubled” by the news of Spacey’s sexual misconduct. “In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time,” the statement said.

And there’s more… It had been announced this June that Spacey would be recognised for his contribution to cinema and arts surpassing barriers as "one of the great multi-dimensional talents" at the 45th International Emmy Awards Gala on November 20 to be held in New York City. That, of course, also stands officially cancelled.
