Small screen, big bucks

The Forbes list of highest paid is an attention-grabber to beat all others, and naturally when they released their list of the highest paid TV actresses in the world, between June 1, 2016 to June 1, 2017, we were proud to see our very own Priyanka Chopra faring pretty well for herself. While the Modern Family’star Sofia Vergara was top of the list with earnings of over $41.5 million (Rs.271 crore) - she was also the highest-earner for the sixth consecutive year - PC came in at number 8, having made $10 million, or Rs.65 crore, in the same period.

The ABC show ‘Quantico’ had propelled Priyanka on to the Forbes list for the first time in 2016. This year, she not only appeared in the second season of the show but also hit the big screen with her Baywatch film, co-starring Dwayne Johnson. Yes, her earnings did dip marginally compared to the $11 million she earned in 2016, but PC could not be worrying too much on that score. She is, after all, a very popular face for product-endorsement, which Forbes goes so far as to call her “most consistent money-maker”. We have no doubt that the girl’s agents are right this minute doing their darndest to snag deals that will add a couple of millions to her already substantial coffers!

Here’s a look at the company PC is keeping on the Forbes list of TV top-grossers…

While Sophia Vergara earned only a quarter of her $41.5 million from her show, the rest came in from endorsement deals with brands like Head & Shoulders, Pepsi and CoverGirl, and from the limited control she retains over licensing deals on her products.

Next on the list is Kaley Cuoco, the Big Bang Theory star, who made $26 million (Rs.170 crore) during the same period.

Third place was taken by Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo, and Mindy Kaling, of The Mindy Project who both earned $13 million (Rs.85 crore) each.

At the number 5 spot was Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: SVU), with $12.5 million (Rs.81.7 crore), tailed by Modern Family star, Julie Bowen at $12 million (Rs.78 crore), and by Kerry Washington in seventh position with $11 million (Rs.71 crore).

Trailing Priyanka is House of Cards’ Robin Wright at $9 million (Rs.58 crore), with Pauley Perette in 10th place with $8.5 million (Rs.55 crore).
