From the archives: When legendary Lata Mangeshkar made every Indian proud by taking the centre-stage with Vogue Magazine’s 1956 issue

Legendary playback singer and Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar left the fans and fraternity in the state of mourning with her heavenly abode today, on February 6, 2022. Fondly known as ‘Lata Ji’ or ‘Didi’ the iconic playback singer was recently tested positive with COVID-19 and was on and off on a ventilator until she breathed her last today. She was 92.

Conferred with multiple awards and prestigious titles such as Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, France’s Officer of the Legion of Honour, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, multiple National Awards and Filmfare Awards amongst many others, her achievements were quite known to the world putting her on one of the oldest and most prestigious magazine- Vogue’s 1956 issue. While the Indian leg came into being around 2007, Lata Didi managed to be one of the icons to cover the international issue.

With a legacy of 130 years, Vogue is the oldest running publication glossy and its March 1956 edition was deemed very special for all the Indians around the world. Titled as “Lata Mangeshkar - The woman with “Maa Saraswati” in her throat,” the cover featured the ‘Nightingale of India’ at her graceful best, in a simple embroidered saree, a delicate necklace and her signature braided hairdo along with a staple bindi and diamond earrings. Despite being black-and-white, the image oozes out her unmatchable aura which manages to pierce straight in our hearts. Hands down, one of Vogue’s iconic cover indeed.

With her soulful voice and unmatched personal style, Lata ji has always managed to put India on a World map. Until her last breath, she served the nation and made us all proud with her impeccable art. Rest in peace, legend.
