Remembering Lata Mangeshkar: White sarees to braids and bindi, India’s ‘Nightingale’ who will live on for her legendary voice and subtle signature style…

Legendary playback singer and Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar left the fans and fraternity in the state of mourning with her heavenly abode today, on February 6, 2022. Fondly known as ‘Lata Ji’ or ‘Didi’ the iconic playback singer was recently tested positive with COVID-19 and was on and off on a ventilator until she breathed her last today. She was 92.

Conferred with multiple awards and prestigious titles such as Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, France’s Officer of the Legion of Honour, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, multiple National Awards and Filmfare Awards amongst many others, Lata ji was known for her iconic, soulful voice that would touch hearts of many. However, her appearance or signature style was completely the opposite. And notably, both of these things spoke volumes about Didi.

Steering clear from bright colours and anything remotely related to makeup, she created a persona that matched the purity of her voice. As we remember our beloved Nightingale of India, here’s looking back and reflecting on her simplistic subtle style that would be remembered for ages to come….

SUBTLE WHITE SAREES

Never the one to get carried away with her success, the legendary singer would more often than not, opt for a subtle style. Be it any award function or public appearance, Lata ji was always seen in minimalistic white and crème sarees with typical gold borders.

With a pallu carefully draped over her neck and shoulders, she created an aura of herself that was simply unmatchable.

BRAIDED HAIRDO

Dressed in a white choli, skirt and two plaits, she appeared on the screen as a small town Konkani girl back in 1942.

Over the years, as her age progressed, she let off her girlhood and switched from a two-braided hairdo to a simple solo plaited look.

THE RED BINDI

Along with those subtle sarees, what became an integral part of her signature look was a typical red bindi. Bindis are an important element of our cultural dress ups and Lata ji made sure she never missed out on those.

Personifying grace, the red bindi was the only pop of colour to her otherwise subtle look.

DIAMONDS

Like the colour white, diamonds speak of purity and so they were Didi’s choice of jewels to go by. Just like her priceless handloom weaves and drapes, the legendary singer had a collection of precious diamond jewels, reflecting back on her respect and success.

Keeping her class intact, Lata ji was seen wearing simplistic earrings and diamond rings for many of her appearances.

Rest in Peace, Lata Ji. Losing you is truly a loss.
