PeepingMoon Exclusive: Imran Khan in and as Happy Patel in his comeback film; Aamir Khan is producing

It’s a life coming full circle for Imran Khan as he gears up for his Bollywood comeback after nine years of hiatus. Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Imran is starting the second phase of his career with his maternal uncle, Aamir Khan, who also launched him into movies, first as a child actor with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) and later as the leading man with Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na in 2008.

“Imran has finally locked in his comeback project, nearly eight months after he hinted at the possibility of returning to movies last year. He will star in and as Happy Patel in a quirky comedy produced by Aamir Khan Productions. The film is a laugh-riot and is set in a familiar yet uniquely fresh world, reminiscent of Imran's previous works. Shooting has already commenced in Goa,” revealed an industry source.

Vir Das, Imran’s co-star from the highly acclaimed 2011 black comedy, Delhi Belly, is directing this film, marking his foray into direction following 17 years of acting career. He has apparently also directed and show-run a yet-to-release web series, but this movie will mark his first feature film directorial. Mona Singh, renowned for her roles in 3 Idiots and Laal Singh Chaddha, plays a pivotal role in the movie, while the female lead’s casting remains under wraps. Aamir Khan is also said to be making a cameo appearance, but it’s not yet confirmed.

Happy Patel has emerged as Imran’s comeback project after his initially planned web series with Abbas Tyrewala fell through. He was supposed to play an intelligence officer in Disney+Hotstar’s espionage thriller series set in the cloak-and-dagger world of South Asian counter-intelligence. Siddharth Roy Kapur was producing, but the project was put on the backburner as a result of the merger between Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Company. Imran recently expressed relief at the cancellation, sharing that he doesn’t want to play a character who solves problems with a gun. Happy Patel appears to be an ideal comeback as it offers audiences a joyful and enjoyable experience, much like his previous movies he is popularly known for even today.

The Imran Khan movie is the latest addition to Aamir Khan Productions’ exciting upcoming lineup. Currently basking in the glory of Laapataa Ladies, which recently dropped on Netflix following its successful theatrical run, the company has four more movies slated ahead: RS Prasanna’s Sitare Zameen Par, starring Aamir and Genelia Deshmukh; Rajkumar Santoshi’s Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol; Sunil Pandey’s Pritam Pyare, starring Sanjay Mishra and Neeraj Sood; and Junaid Khan’s One Day remake with Sai Pallavi.
