PeepingMoon Exclusive: Ajay Devgn ropes in THIS Punjabi director for Son of Sardaar 2; Shooting commences in mid-2024

Ajay Devgn has locked in the director for Son of Sardaar 2. Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Punjabi filmmaker Vijay Kumar Arora has been roped in to direct the sequel to Devgn's much-loved action comedy, Son of Sardaar. The project is currently in pre-production and will go on floors in the second half of this year, aiming for a theatrical release in mid-2025.

Vijay Kumar Arora is a cinematographer-turned-director, popularly known for helming Punjabi movies such as Harjeeta (2018), Baby Dolls (2019), Kali Jotta (2023), and Godday Godday Chaa (2023). Son of Sardaar 2 will mark his Bollywood directorial debut after having previously worked as a cinematographer on over 30 Hindi movies. “Ajay Devgn was looking for a fresh voice to narrate the tale of a happy-go-lucky sardar in a distinctly different manner from the first part and found an ideal fit in Vijay Kumar Arora, who has already showcased his talent as a comedy movie director with his Punjabi films. Moreover, Ajay is familiar with Vijay’s expertise, as they have collaborated on Mahesh Manjrekar’s Tera Mera Saath Rahen (2001) and Prabhu Deva’s Action Jackson (2014), where Vijay served as a cinematographer. They share an excellent rapport and are excited to embark on this new journey together,” an industry source told us.

Although officially termed a sequel to the 2012 blockbuster, Son of Sardaar 2 will feature an entirely new cast and crew, with Ajay Devgn being the only constant. Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt are not returning, nor is Ashwni Dhir, who directed the first part, involved in the sequel. The plot details have been kept under wraps, but it's said to have no direct connection to Son of Sardaar, although it will be set against a similar backdrop.

Ajay will commence shooting for this film after finishing Luv Ranjan’s De De Pyaar De 2, which goes on floors in June 2024 in London. Prior to this, he will complete shooting for Rohit Shetty's Singham Again and Raj Kumar Gupta’s Raid 2. His upcoming lineup also includes Neeraj Pandey's Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, Abhishek Kapoor's untitled period film, and Amit Sharma’s sports biopic, Maidaan, which releases in theatres on Eid weekend, on April 10.
