PeepingMoon Exclusive: Bobby Deol to play a detective in Fanaa director Kunal Kohli's next mystery-comedy

Bobby Deol is making all the right choices in his career’s 2.0 version. The actor is not only choosing different genres but also experimenting with his roles that are equally exciting and distinct from one another. In the last two years, he has played an upright police officer in Netflix’s Class of 83, a ruthless mercenary in Zee5’s Love Hostel, and a self-proclaimed Godman in MX Player’s biggest hit, Aashram. Next up for him is Kabir Singh director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s crime drama, Animal, where he plays the antagonist to Ranbir Kapoor, and Abbas-Mustan’s now-in-trouble Penthouse, which sees him sharing screen space with Arjun Rampal and Sharman Joshi. Spicing up his forthcoming movie lineup a little more, Bobby is now all set to play a detective in his next.

Peepingmoon.com has exclusively learned that Bobby Deol has signed a mystery-comedy film that will see him playing the role of a police detective. The yet-untitled film is said to be a light-hearted dramatic comedy with a highly improbable plot revolving around a detective, who gets involved in exaggerated situations while trying to solve a mystery. The film is believed to be more along the lines of "The Pink Panther", a Hollywood film franchise focusing on a series of comedy-mystery films, as the protagonist in the Bobby Deol film takes a similar route to that of Inspector Jacques Clouseau in Blake Edwards’ farcical American film.

Kunal Kohli, who has directed movies such as Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Hum Tum, Fanaa, and Teri Meri Kahaani, will helm this film while Ajay Rai of Jar Pictures is producing it. Kunal is finally working with Bobby Deol after their first collaboration for the Do Aur Do Paanch remake didn’t materialise in 2013. Kunal was working on this 1980 film’s remake and had approached Bobby and Abhishek Bachchan to step into the shoes of Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan, respectively, but the film never saw the light of day. The new film marks Bobby’s return to the comedy genre after his back-to-back serious roles in the recent past.

Bobby Deol will start shooting for this film next month in London. The makers have planned a two-month one-go schedule to finish the filming so that Bobby can join the sets of Animal immediately after that. He is then expected to shoot for Anil Sharma’s Apne 2, which reunites him with his father Dharmendra, brother Sunny Deol, and nephew Karan Deol on screen. The Gupt actor is also in talks with Shershaah producer Shabbir Boxwala for a drama film about a man who has to face countless consequences for his forthright nature, but the paperwork for that is still pending. Kunal Kohli, meanwhile, is gearing up for the release of his next romantic-comedy, Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story. The film marks the debut of filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor’s daughter, Kaveri Kapoor, who has been paired opposite the late Amrish Puri’s grandson, and Yeh Saali Aashiqui actor Vardhan Puri.
