Ad world success to Bollywood breakout: Meet filmmaker Yogesh Deshpande

Bollywood may soon have its next breakout storyteller — and he’s arriving with a background no one expected.

After directing over 100 ad films and building one of Pune’s most dynamic production ecosystems, filmmaker Yogesh Deshpande is stepping into Hindi cinema with a voice that blends advertising precision, musical heritage, and emotionally charged storytelling. And insiders are already taking notice.

Yogesh first made waves with his debut feature 66 Sadashiv, but it was his bold second project — India’s first-ever musical biopic Swaragandharvaa Sudhir Phadke — distinguished for incorporating original playback compositions performed in the authentic voices of iconic singers themselves — that turned heads across the industry. The film featured rare original recordings sung by legends Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale, Sudhir Phadke, and Kishore Kumar — a historic musical legacy captured on screen.

Released across five countries, the film earned critical acclaim, international recognition, and even made it to the Oscars 2025 contender list — a rare feat for a culturally rooted Indian film.

Now Yogesh is preparing for his most ambitious leap yet: his Bollywood directorial debut Thumbz Up.

Set in the visually stunning Konkan belt, the film explores the human cost of the digital divide — a theme rarely explored in mainstream Hindi cinema. Driven by a strong female protagonist, the story promises emotion, scale, and a cinematic world that feels both intimate and universal.

Yogesh says, “Cinema, for me, has always been about emotion before scale. With Thumbz Up, I wanted to tell a story that feels rooted in real lives — one that reflects how technology shapes people, relationships, and aspirations. It’s a deeply human story set against a landscape that is visually grand but emotionally intimate.”

For Deshpande, the move into Bollywood is not a departure from his roots but an expansion of them. His work consistently reflects a commitment to Indian storytelling traditions — music, emotion, and character-driven narratives — while embracing modern pacing and visual language. That balance positions him as part of a new wave of filmmakers bringing regional authenticity into mainstream Hindi cinema.

At a time when audiences increasingly respond to stories that feel deeply personal yet widely relatable, Deshpande’s cinema carries a quiet confidence. Rather than chasing spectacle, he focuses on building immersive, emotionally truthful worlds shaped by texture, place, and character.

Extensive location recce has already been completed, and casting is underway. Industry insiders say the project is drawing attention for its strong narrative voice, scenic scale, and socially relevant themes — a combination that aligns with the evolving tastes of both OTT audiences and theatrical viewers.

Industry observers say Yogesh represents a new generation of filmmakers — creators who are technically sharp, culturally grounded, and commercially aware. His advertising background brings speed and craft; his cinema brings heart.

With Thumbz Up, Yogesh Deshpande is poised to introduce a distinctive voice to Bollywood — one shaped by years of advertising craft, musical heritage, and a deep belief that cinema must stay connected to its cultural soil even as it travels globally.

At a time when audiences crave authenticity over formula, Yogesh Deshpande may be arriving at exactly the right moment. And Bollywood could be his next big stage.

If early industry buzz is any indication, his Bollywood chapter may just be beginning but it’s already one many are watching closely.
