Shammi Kapoor’s glow dimmed with Kaka’s rise: Ashish Vidyarthi remembers the moment

Shammi Kapoor made his own identity in Bollywood and his popularity was at its peak in the 60s. But as soon as Rajesh Khanna i.e. “Kaka” came into cinema, Shammi Kapoor's star slowly started fading. Recently, actor Ashish Vidyarthi told that he got a valuable lesson about this change and popularity being temporary from Shammi Kapoor.

Ashish told in a conversation with Siddharth Kannan that one day he suddenly met Shammi Kapoor in Sharjah. At that time Ashish was shooting for the TV series 'Dastan' and Shammi Kapoor had come there for some project. In this meeting, Shammi Kapoor told him about the harsh and fast-changing world of Bollywood. He said that when his own popularity was gradually decreasing, people used to ask him about the crowd decreasing. Shammi jokingly said, “The crowd just went to Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow, ashirwad paar, chali gayi.”

This joke and thought left a deep impact on Ashish Vidyarthi. He said that Shammi Kapoor gave a clear message that success is momentary and people change with time. Those who praise you today, cannot be behind you tomorrow. Therefore, success should be cherished, but assuming that it will last forever is wrong.

Shammi Kapoor’s popularity was at its peak in the 60s, while Rajesh Khanna’s era came in the early 70s. After this, Amitabh Bachchan emerged as the “Angry Young Man”. Interestingly, Shammi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna shared the screen for the first time in Ramesh Sippy’s film ‘Andaz’, in which Rajesh Khanna made a special appearance. Shammi Kapoor said goodbye to this world on 14 August 2011.
