50 Years of Sholay: When Jai and Veeru reached the set in an auto

'Sholay', released in 1975, achieved such a place in the history of Indian cinema, which cannot be forgotten even after 50 years. The pair of Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra won the hearts of the audience in the characters of Jai-Veeru. On 15th August, 'Sholay' is celebrating its Golden Jubilee, and during this countdown, Big B shared a funny story related to this film.

Actually, these days Amitabh Bachchan is hosting the 17th season of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'. In the first episode of the show, a viewer asked him - "Which is your most memorable behind the scenes moment from the shooting of Sholay?" To this, Big B smiled and said, "There are many... tell me which one should I tell, because the shooting went on for many years." When the audience asked him to narrate an incident with Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan said, “Dharam paaji is a very carefree person. He used to sleep wherever he felt like. During the shooting in Ramgarh, if the shoot ever got delayed, he would say, ‘You guys go, I will lie down here.’”

Amitabh further recalled another incident laughingly, “Once we both were leaving the hotel in Bangalore, when fans surrounded the car and started shouting loudly, ‘O Dharam paaji’. Dharam paaji, without thinking, got out of the car, stopped an auto and said, ‘Come and sit’. Both of us reached the set in that auto. Imagine, Jai and Veeru in an auto for shooting!”

Ramesh Sippy directed ‘Sholay’ is an action-adventure film in which Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra) get the mission to catch the dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Hema Malini played the famous character of Basanti in this film. This story of friendship, courage and struggle is still as fresh in the hearts of the audience as it was 50 years ago.
