Released on 15 August 1975, 'Sholay' is counted among the biggest and most successful films of Hindi cinema. From Gabbar Singh to Jai-Veeru's friendship, the dialogues, songs and stories of this film are still on people's tongues. As the time for completion of 50 years of this cult classic is coming closer, old stories related to it are again in discussion.
Recently, on the set of 'Kaun Banega Crorepati', Amitabh Bachchan shared a shocking story related to the climax scene of 'Sholay'. He said that during this shoot, a real bullet passed close to him, and he narrowly escaped. The surprising thing is that this bullet was not fired by 'Gabbar' i.e. Amjad Khan, but by 'Veeru' i.e. Dharmendra. Amitabh said – “In the climax scene, Dharmendra was standing below and I was on the hill. According to the scene, Dharmendra had to pick up the bullets and cartridges and keep them with him, but the cartridges were falling again and again, due to which retakes were being done. Dharmendra got irritated when this happened many times.”
In anger, he loaded the cartridges directly in the gun – and these were real cartridges. Then suddenly he fired the bullet. “That bullet passed very close to my temple… if there was even a slight mistake, who knows what would have happened,” said Big B. After this incident, everyone on the set was stunned. Even Amitabh himself could not understand for a few moments what had just happened. He further said – “I was just standing there shocked, thankfully I survived.”
Many such stories related to ‘Sholay’ have come to the fore before – sometimes about getting injured during stunts, sometimes funny stories of the shooting location. But even today, anyone’s heart can beat after hearing this ‘real bullet’ incident in the climax scene.
