South Indian veteran actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party chief Kamal Haasan on Friday started a new chapter of his political career in Parliament. He took oath as a Rajya Sabha member. During the swearing-in, Kamal Haasan took oath in Tamil language, after which other MPs present in Parliament welcomed him warmly by thumping the table.
Kamal Haasan's reaching Rajya Sabha is considered to be an important turning point in his political career. This is the first time he is playing such an important role in national level politics. After taking oath, while talking to ANI, he said, "I am very proud and honored about this honor and responsibility." It is worth noting that on June 12, 2025, six MPs including Kamal Haasan were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha.
However, the past month was full of controversies for Kamal Haasan. During the promotion of his film ‘Thug Life’, he had said in a statement that "Kannada language originated from Tamil." After this statement, there was a huge outrage among pro-Kannada organizations and cultural groups. An FIR was also registered against Kamal Haasan. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for August 30.
