The Government of India has taken a tough stand on the increasing obscenity and objectionable content on digital platforms and has banned 25 OTT platforms and their associated mobile apps. These platforms are allegedly accused of broadcasting pornographic and content against Indian cultural and legal values.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has taken this decision after receiving information from various investigating agencies. The ministry said that this step has been taken with the aim of controlling the obscenity spreading in the society and ensuring compliance with Indian laws and social norms.
The popular apps and platforms that have been banned include names like Ullu, Alt Balaji, Desiflix and Big Shots. Apart from this, apps like Prime Play, Hunters, Dream Films, Rangini and NeonX VIP are also in this list. These platforms were facing criticism for a long time due to adult content and bold web series.
The ministry has directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to immediately block these apps and websites. The government says that despite repeated advisories to these platforms, the rules were being violated. Many apps were available on third party app stores and were also being promoted extensively through social media. This move of the government is being considered a big and strong signal towards maintaining control and ethics in the digital space.
