Two of the most talked about and successful films of Hindi cinema – Oh My God (OMG) and PK – not only won the hearts of the audience but also gave rise to a deep debate in the society. Both OMG, directed by Umesh Shukla and PK, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, were appreciated for their story, acting and music. These films not only received praise from critics but also performed well at the box office. But very few people would know that there was a time when a big controversy came to the fore regarding the release of OMG.
About a decade ago, when OMG was close to release, it was rumored that PK producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had given a bribe of 8 crore to Umesh Shukla to stop the release of OMG. This news had created a stir in the media and the film industry. However, now years later, director Umesh Shukla has broken his silence on this controversy and revealed the truth.
Recently, while talking to Friday Talkies, Umesh Shukla said, "There was a rumour at that time that Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who was associated with PK, gave me 8 crores rupees so that I don't make the film. But it was just a rumor, nothing like this happened." He further said, "Rajkumar Hirani sahab, Abhijat Joshi, Vidhu Vinod Chopra sahab and Aamir Khan - all of them are extremely talented people and they don't need to stoop so low and pay money to do something like this."
Umesh clearly said that it was just a gossip that was fueled by some people, but there was no truth in it. With this statement, he has put an end to this old controversy. It is clear that there may have been competition between these two pillars of cinema, but respect always remained.
