Bollywood actor Aamir Khan believes that more theatres are needed to widen the reach of cinema in India. He said this while speaking on the topic 'Studios of the Future: Putting India on the World Studio Map' on the second day of the ongoing 'Waves Summit 2025' in Mumbai. Aamir said that India is a film-loving country, but still most of the people in the country do not have access to cinemas.
Aamir Khan said, "I think in India we need to invest in different types of theatres. Many districts and large areas of the country do not have a single cinema hall. This is a huge gap. The main reason for the challenges we have faced in the last few decades is the lack of screens. Unless there are adequate number of screens across the country, people will not be able to watch films as easily." He further said that India is far behind America and China in terms of the number of theatres. “India has around 10,000 screens, while the US has around 40,000 screens, even though their population is one-third of India's. China, on the other hand, has more than 90,000 screens. That means both these countries are way ahead of us.”
Aamir also stressed that if India has to make a strong place in the global film market, then it is imperative to increase the number of theatres across the country. This will not only benefit the film industry, but rural and remote audiences will also be able to connect with this experience.
