Vijay Sethupathi reveals he was heartbroken when Gully Boy was sent to Oscars instead of Super Deluxe: It’s politics

Vijay Sethupathi never fails to impress his audience with his impeccable choice of scripts. One of his iconic projects was Super Deluxe. Released in 2019, it had four interwoven stories. The film was directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. Not just fans, Vijay also pinned hopes on Super Deluxe's Oscar entry that year. However, Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy was chosen instead.

Recently, while promoting Merry Christmas with Katrina Kaif and Sriram Raghavan, Vijay said at an event hosted by Bollywood Hungama that it did break his heart when Super Deluxe couldn't make it to the Oscars. He shared, "It was heartbreaking for me and the team of Super Deluxe. I was shattered, but it’s politics. We know that something happened. It’s not because I was in that film. Even if I were not in that film, I would’ve wanted that film to go there. Something happened in between and I don’t want to talk about that. It’s unnecessary."

Super Deluxe also starred Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Ramya Krishnan, Mirnalini Ravi and others. Vijay played the central role in the segment titled Shilpa. It was the story of a person who returned home after gender-affirming surgery.
