‘Atrangi Re’ deal was signed for OTT, despite theatres opening the filmmakers said they would not backtrack

The trailer of Aanand L Rai’s musical romantic drama Atrangi Re, starring Akshay Kumar, Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan, was launched this afternoon and drew an excited and appreciative response from the Bollywood media. The proud director had said earlier, “The world of Atrangi Re is full of colour, the magic and madness of love, and it’s also charming with its purity and soulfulness.”

It is all that and more. It is the challenge of working out a love triangle between characters who have a vast age difference among them. Akshay is 54, Dhanush is 38 and Sara – just 26. Yet the trailer bubbles over with their pantomime. It is a happy, funny, colourful and energetic trailer of a film that the director and actors are said to have had a blast making.

Releasing this Christmas on Disney+ Hotstar, the film’s entertaining music is scored by the legendary A. R. Rahman. That might have been a good reason to watch Atrangi Re on the big screen. But, trade sources said, co-producers Akshay (Cape of Good Films), Aanand (Colour Yellow Productions) and Bhushan Kumar (T Series) had struck a deal to stream it on OTT when they started making the film and the lockdown was in force and theatres shut, and they have made it clear that would never backtrack on it. Meanwhile, the trailer is being watched and the film is being described as a wholesome entertainer with every feel good emotion in the book.
