He taught me ‘less is more’: Nawazuddin Siddiqui on Irrfan’s minimalistic form of acting as he remembers the actor on his first death anniversary

Irrfan left behind an impressive body of work when he bid adieu to the mortal world last year on April 29, 2020. An actor par-excellence, Irrfan was an institution and is revered for his minimalistic style of acting and his screen presence. However, very few people know that he directed a film titled Alvida that had Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead. Remembering the late actor, Nawazuddin revealed what he learnt from the senior actor.

Sharing an anecdote from their shoot days from Alvida, Nawaz told a leading daily, “When he was directing me in Alvida around 2003, he demonstrated a very nice aspect, about using fewer and crisper dialogues. In a scene where I was supposed to ask a girl to come over and sit on my bicycle, Irrfan bhai told me that I can drop the word ‘cycle’ since movies are an audio-visual medium. He taught me ‘less is more’. This is a theory that even I used to follow and his advice only cemented it.”

Nawaz further said, “He was my senior by 10 years! I admired his unique style of acting, it was very impressive. The natural ease and casualness in his performance were amazing.” Irrfan and Nawazuddin worked together in several films out of which only The Lunchbox could see the light of the day.

Irrfan passed away last year after battling neuroendocrine tumour for two years. He is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and sons Babil I Khan and Ayan Khan.
