'It's an important and different role, for a change I'm not playing a mother,' says Seema Pahwa on her character in Alia Bhatt's 'Gangubai Kathiawadi'

It won't be wrong to say that Seema Pahwa is Bollywood's current favourite maa. From playing a doting mother to Kriti Sanon, Bhumi Pednekar and others, the veteran actress has won hearts of the audience. Now, as Seema has joined the cast of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming directorial Gangubai Kathiawadi featuring Alia Bhatt in the titular role, she is all set to break past her stereotypical image. Seema, during an interview with a leading daily, spoke about her role in the gangster drama. Thanking Sanjay for the role, she told that her character is important to the narrative and is a different one. 

"I'm playing an important and really different role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi. For a change, I'm not playing a mother in the film. I'm thankful to Sanjay ji for offering me such a role," Seema told.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on a brothel madam from the red light area, Kamathipura in Mumbai. She is said to have changed the face of the region and is one of the most remembered women from the history of Mumbai. Gangubai is believed to have been pushed into prostitution at a very young age and became the most influential pimp, having served several renowned criminals from the city. 

Gangubai Kathiawadi will be co-produced by Sanjay and Jayantilal Gada of Pen India Ltd. It is tentatively scheduled to release on September 11, 2020, however, reports did the rounds that the film will be pushed ahead due to the lockdown.
