Hindi film industry stands to lose Rs 800 crore: Trade analysts predict a bleak first quarter for Bollywood with delayed releases amid COVID -19 pandemic

In the wake of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, all filmmaking and producing bodies have unanimously decided to stop shooting for all kinds of entertainment formats temporarily. The collections of the March 6 release, Baaghi 3, and Irrfan Khan’s comeback film Angrezi Medium, have taken a serious hit owing to more than half of cinemas shutting down across India.

Talking about the same, Ahmed Khan told a leading daily, “It’s a leaden feeling when unforeseen events affect our movies. The numbers would have been a lot different if this hadn’t happened." On the other hand, trade analyst Komal Nahta has predicted Hindi film industry to lose Rs 800 crore owning to delays in releases. “It’s a loss of Rs 25- 30 crore for the makers of Baaghi 3. Theatres shutting down have also impacted the weekend business of Angrezi Medium,” he informed.

It was reported only yesterday that superstar Salman Khan is continuing shooting in the city for his upcoming flick Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai even though the makers insist they are strictly adhering to the safety norms of World Health Organisation (WHO). Meanwhile, the final schedule of Brahmastra has also been called off with Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer Sooryavanshi delaying its release. Not to miss, Kabir Khan’s Ranveer Singh-starrer ’83 also stands in a limbo. Expressing his concern, Taran added, “I foresee a chaotic calendar once it is back to regular programming, unless filmmakers come together to chalk out a schedule. There are just 52 weeks in a year and with some of them already gone, we can expect multiple releases coming together, with one film cutting into another’s business. Getting back to normalcy will take time.”

India has registered 108 confirmed cases of Covid-19 so far.
