'Baaghi 3' director Ahmed Khan finds Taapsee Pannu's Thappad 'strange'; actress gives back a fitting reply

Taapsee Pannu, after a successful year at the box-office with Badla and Saand Ki Aankh in 2019, returned to the theatres with yet another hard-hitting and thought-provoking tale with Anubhav Sinha's Thappad. The film which is a tight slap on regressive societal norms, has indeed found immense support from the audience. While fans and the audience are going gaga over the genre and nature of the film, filmmaker Ahmed Khan, it seems, hasn't caught fancy with the subject. The director, whose Baaghi 3 recently hit the screens, told in an interview that he found the concept of Thappad strange and added that in future if he slaps his wife, she can give it back to him twice. He said taking legal action and leaving a husband forever just for a slap is beyond his understanding.

“I found the concept of Thappad very strange. I don’t understand just because the husband slapped his wife, will she leave him forever? If she has a problem, she too should slap her husband twice in return. If I ever slap my wife, she can slap me back and end it. If I tell her that I don’t want to be with her anymore, then she can also tell me the same. But, will a slap decide whether a couple can stay together or not? But then, everyone has a different point of view and way of looking at it,” Ahmed told.

Soon after his statement went viral, Taapsee, who plays the role of Amrita in Thappad, responded by saying that he makes films that are correct according to him and the same applies to her and the makers. She further added that it is the audience' reaction that matters. She concluded her stand by stating that Ahmed can continue making films that he is comfortable with and allow her to do what she is okay with. “He makes films based on what he finds correct and it is the same for us. At the end of the day, it is the audience who give out the final verdict. We have always seen relationships where there is love and respect. But, there might be those kinds of relationships too, of which he is talking about. He can continue to make films he is comfortable with. We will do what we are comfortable doing,” Taapsee said.

Thappad also stars Pavail Gulati, Dia Mirza, Ratna Pathak Shah, Tanvi Azmi, Geetika Vidya, Maya Sarao, Naila Grewal, Kumud Mishra and Gracy Goswami. It is produced by Bhushan Kumar's T-Series along with Anubhav and Benaras Mediaworks. The film released today February 28, 2020.
