First actor to extend support: Sona Mohapatra thanks Abhay Deol for backing her in fighting Anu Malik in the wake of MeToo allegations

After the #MeToo allegations gained fuel last year, one of the names that was added to its glittering perpetrator list was of music composed Anu Malik. Several women came out claiming sexual harassment at the hands of the music director and subsequently he was fired from Indian Idol Season 9 as he was one of the judges on the show. However, now he has been reinstated in the music reality show’s tenth season and is back on the judges’ panel.

Singer Sona Mohapatra who accused him and supported the women in their allegations against Malik has always been vocal about the music composer’s supposedly predatory behaviour. Ever since, Malik has come back to India Idol she has lambasted Sony TV and the show for their action. Now, she has received support in her fight against Malik from Abhay Deol who took to Twitter to lend credibility to Sona. He commented on Sona’s post to lend his support to her.

Sona shared the screenshot of Abhay’s post and applauded the actor for standing up for what is right. She also called out other Bollywood celebs who have kept mum on the issue. Sona also garnered support from singer Neha Bhasin who also shared her grueling experience with Mailk.

In an earlier interview with a leading portal, Neha had asked very pertinent questions to the channel. She had also taken the show’s sponsors to task on fraternizing with Malik after such a grave charge is levied against him. She said, “I just have one point to make - why is he so important to a particular channel that he has to be reinstated? They need to answer why he is so important that the morality of a channel isn't given much importance and the dignity of all the women is ignored. Also, if he was not at fault last year, why was he taken off the show in the first place? Honestly, they should be questioned rather than us because we have already spoken our truth. Somebody needs to ask Sony TV and Anu Malik why they are quiet."

Reportedly, the channel is rethinking about their move of reinstating Malik on the reality show that also sees caters to teenagers and children. However, no official confirmation has been made until now.
