Taapsee Pannu's Thappad to draw insights from Shahid Kapoor's Kabir Singh, to question the notion of slapping being a form of love?

Shahid Kapoor's-Kiara Advani's blockbuster film Kabir Singh had the house clearly divided. While some showered love and appreciation towards the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial, some went on to slam it for its misogynistic content and the extent of violence shown. The film which went on to become Shahid's career's highest-grossing film had controversies enveloped since the beginning and only went on to snowball after Sandeep addressed them during an interview. The director, in the interview, in order to clear the air around Shahid slapping Kiara in the film, said such acts can be done in love and if one can't slap their beloved ones, it can't be love. Well, this surely didn't go down well with many and added to the misery. Considering this statement and the nature of their film, Anubhav Sinha and the team behind Thappad, featuring eight actresses including Taapsee Pannu, have incorporated the controversy and the reference of Shahid's Kabir slapping Kiara's Preeti, reported a leading daily. Sources close to the film informed the daily that the trailer also has a dialogue that questions the belief of slapping being a way to express love.

"The film and the trailer have a dialogue that questions the notion that thappad is also a form of love. The line is an obvious reference to Vanga's remark that had received severe backlash on social media. Since the topic of debate coincided with their film's title, Taapsee, director Anubhav Sinha and writer Gaurav Solanki decided to include a scene that offers a counter-narrative. It was a fitting addition since Thappad explores different shades of man-woman relationships through the perspective of eight female protagonists, with violence against women being one of the themes. The said scene discusses the impact of popular culture on perpetuating ideas of domestic violence. The makers have cut a rough trailer so far, in which the reference remains intact," the source told.
