Dil Chahta Hai starring Saif Ali Khan, Aamir Khan and Akshaye Khanna in central roles clocked 18 years since release on August 10 this year and continues to remain a favourite amongst the audience of all age groups. With the popularity of the film still intact and considering the wave of remakes and sequels, it is inevitable for fans to demand a follow up of the Farhan Akhtar directorial. Addressing this demand, Akshaye aka Sid, during the trailer launch of his upcoming film Section 375, clarified that the sequel will be planned but not immediately. The actor told that he requested Farhan to plan the sequel when Saif, Aamir and he cross their 50s in order to retain the fun and freshness of the film.
"I always told Farhan to wait till we all are 50 plus and then make Dil Chahta Hai 2 as it will be more fun rather than making it 10-15 years later. So now Aamir is 50 plus, Saif will be there soon and I will take a little more time to be there," Akshaye gushed.

Released on July 24, 2001, Dil Chahta Hai was based on the bond between three best friends, played by Aamir, Saif and Akshaye. Dil Chahta Hai also starred Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia in lead roles.It traces their journey from their carefree college days to becoming mature and responsible adults. The film won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi that year. The film marked the debut of Farhan Akhtar as a director. It was bankrolled by Farhan's friend and now a partner in hos home production Excel Entertainment.
