You don't think about commercial gains when you do a film like this: Ayushmann Khurrana on his upcoming film 'Article 15'

Ayushmann Khurrana recently spoke about his upcoming film Article 15 and the need to tell important stories. His latest film appears to be an intriguing take on a very important subject - caste difference. In an interview with Anupama Chopra, for Film Companion, Ayushmann talked about selecting films with important subjects, living up to people's expectations, and his upcoming films.

Ayushmann opened up about how caste difference is a social issue. He said, "You don't think about commercial gains when you do a film like this. It's like a social responsibility as an artist. You should do a film like this because society needs this."

When asked why he thinks Indian cinema has chosen to be caste blind, Ayushmann said, "It is just not Hindi cinema. We are also caste blind, especially the urban-India. In rural-India, it is so rampant, it is crazy. it is so disheartening to see what happens at human level. The so-called upper-class has blinders on - we don't know but it does exist. Everywhere, in colleges, in schools."

On being asked about the need for his character to be a Brahmin and not a Dalit, Ayushmann clarified that the film has a Dalit hero too. “There is a Dalit hero also in our film. We have taken inspiration from Chandrashekhar, Rohith Vemula and different characters,” he said.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Article 15 releases on June 28, 2019.
