Deepika Padukone truly shed off things we know of her, the face, the brand for ‘Chhapaak’: Meghna Gulzar on the actor playing an acid attack survivor

Meghna Gulzar and Deepika Padukone are collaborating for the first time in one of the most anticipated films Chhapaak. The film will see Deepika play acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal and also stars Vikrant Massey as Alok Dixit, Laxmi’s real-life partner. The team recently wrapped the film’s shooting and in a recent interview to an entertainment website, Meghna spoke highly of Deepika who we see in an unrecognizable avatar with a disfigured face heavy with prosthetics to resemble Laxmi’s after her attack.

When Meghna was asked whether she always envisioned Deepika in Laxmi’s role, she said, “I would be lying if I would say that Deepika was not always a part of the film I mean it was like this unsaid and unspoken wish which both Atika Chohan (writer) and I had. We have seen pictures of how Laxmi looked like before the attack and I found an uncanny similarity to Deepika, but you know, at that time, we were like we are letting our imaginations go wild, I don't think Deepika would give this thought a moment because it is just too radical, but it was a thought we silently nurtured in our hearts.”

She further praised Deepika for immersing herself in the role completely and said, “I really think it takes a tremendous amount of grounding of yourself to be able to get out of your skin and be able to completely immerse yourself into someone else's skin. She completely shed off things as we know of her as Deepika Padukone, the face, the brand, the actor. She shed it all to play this part. That takes a lot of grit."

Chhapaak is all set to release on January 10, 2020. Besides starring as the lead, Deepika is also producing the venture.
