For me, Malti is Deepika and Deepika is Malti: Meghna Gulzar on Deepika Padukone's transformation for Chhapaak

Deepika Padukone, with her first look from her film Chhapaak, stunned everyone. Her look as an acid attack victim took fans by surprise and made the film one of the most awaited ones. The team of Chhapaak wrapped the shoot just two days ago and Deepika with her co-star Vikrant Massey and director Meghna Gulzar shared some BTS pictures from the sets on their Instagram handle. In those pictures, we can clearly spot the amazing transformation of Deepika as Malti, the acid attack victim. The journey, however, wasn't easy for the actress, revealed the director of the film Meghna in an interview with a leading daily. Meghna, during the interview, spoke about her vision for Malti and how Deepika lived up to it. She also said that Deepika as Malti will be etched in her heart forever.

"There is Malti, and then there is Deepika who became Malti. Malti’s presence on screen reflects the expression in Deepika’s eyes and on her face which comes through the prosthetics. For me, Malti is Deepika and Deepika is Malti," Meghna quoted.

Talking about the transformation, Meghna said Deepika would two-and-a-half hours of prosthetics every day. "But you won’t see all that she went through behind the scene. And that’s the most beautiful part," Meghna added.

Giving an insight into her vision behind the film, Meghna said she didn't want to recreate Laxmi Agarwal, the inspiration for the film, on Deepika's face but to make the actress' face looked scarred. "I didn’t want people to watch this film with their eyes shut, the idea was not to create Laxmi’s face on Deepika but something that would be Deepika’s face had it been scarred the way Laxmi’s was," Meghna told the leading daily.

Meghna also clarified that Chhapaak is not entirely based on Laxmi's story but has a larger perspective on the topic. The film will see Deepika playing the role of Malti, a girl who becomes a victim of an acid attack. Vikrant Massey will be Deepika's Malti's love interest, Amol. Directed by Meghna, Chhapaak has been shot in both Delhi and Mumbai and will release on January 10, 2020.
