Yuvraj Singh announced his retirement from International cricket yesterday. Tributes and well wishes poured in from all quarters for the stylish all-rounder. People jailed him for his resilience, perseverance, love for the game, determination and his undying spirit. Several celebrities as well as cricketers wished Yuvraj all the best for his future and thanked him for the great service he had done by playing for the nation. However, two posts from celebrities on social media stood apart from the rest of the messages. These were really heartfelt and emotional posts by Badshah and Kunal Kemmu.
Badshah penned an emotional message for Yuvraj and shared a picture of the cricketer as well. He wrote, “This man in the picture will always be a legend to me. Yuvi paaji is probably one of the reasons for where I am in life right now. The young kid from Chandigarh who excelled in his profession and became world class. He gave hope to a lot of kids from Chandigarh. One of them was me. Through his game, he made a statement that it does not matter which city you’re from, what matters is where you want to go, where you want to reach and what you want to be. A typical Chandigarh guy who loves his cars and his food became an inspiration for millions of kids. He taught me not to give a f**k about people who put you down and how you should let your work do the talking. And his work screamed. His work roared, straight into the face of the opponents. On the other hand, Kunal shared a personal anecdote that spoke about Yuvraj’s determination and strength of character. He recounted the cricketer’s grit and determination and the promise that he will bounce back after a bad phase to become one of the greatest players of Indian cricket. He wrote, “I have not known many athletes or sportsmen/women personally. But I have known Yuvraj Singh and I have always been a huge fan of his even before I knew him. Not only is he a gifted cricketer who is an embodiment of the term sportsmanship in so many ways, he is also a fighter who made me believe that if you really want to do something and be the best at it you have to work on yourself constantly and fight the odds no matter how big they are. I remember once sitting at dinner with him and another friend on the 13th December, one day after his birthday. He had been having a bad season and after a sub par performance in the Sri Lankan tri series was the focus of heavy public criticism. Most people thought that he was done. We spoke about it at that dinner and I so clearly remember him saying to me that what he was going to do that year would be bigger than all of what he had done in his entire career so far. And that was the year that India won the World Cup and Yuvraj Singh became the man of the tournament. It was also the first time in my life that I saw a cricket match in the stadium. The finals India vs Sri Lanka and that was also thanks to Yuvi, who said to me that I had to watch it and personally handed me the tickets in the lobby of the Taj hotel one night before the match. I saw the champion lift the trophy the next night and I can’t put in words the kind of admiration and respect I had for him. This admiration only grew when he told me about his illness and, with the same confidence that he had displayed at dinner, he said that he would beat it. There was no doubt in my mind that he would and he did beat it.”
