Imtiaz Ali decodes Ranbir Kapoor’s and Deepika Padukone’s iconic café scene in Tamasha, admits it was 'cruel'

starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone is one of Imtiaz Ali’s Tamasha best-directed films. The film was critically acclaimed as well as appreciated by the audience. The film released four years back but is still one of the popular films of today and its songs and scenes are still fresh in the minds of the audience. However, one scene in particular, is etched in the audience’s minds where the lead characters Ved and Tara have an emotional outburst at a café. Their cathartic outburst is difficult to define in words. In a recent interaction, Imtiaz talked about what went behind that scene and decoded it.

The director revealed to an entertainment portal, “This scene was shot over two nights. There's a point where Tara would start crying. To bring her back to the point where she was not crying, and then take her back again over that bridge of breaking down had to be negotiated. So I was watching her and I knew where she was going emotionally. I was always cutting a shot, sometimes even great shots because if she broke down, there would be no recovery.”

Imtiaz also lauded Deepika and Ranbir and said that one needs such actors to bring the complexities and nail the details that they can be translated on screen. he even revealed that both Deepika and Ranbir improvised on the scene as the scene wasn't completely ready and was only half-baked during the reading. According to Imtiaz, the scene is “cruel” as Ved is aware of what he is doing and how he is misbehaving with Tara. However, he is unable to control that and in that instance. we get to see the two distinct sides of his personality. On the other hand, Tara is unable to let go.
