Hope I make her proud: Madhuri Dixit on replacing Sridevi in Kalank

Madhuri Dixit said that she hopes to make Sridevi proud with her role in Abhishek Varman’s Kalank and while speaking to a leading daily, admitted that she “was extremely emotional” when producer Karan Johar offered her the role after the veteran actress’ death.

“When I was on the sets, I looked at it as just another role. But, yes, I was extremely emotional when Karan (Johar) asked me to take up her role. I hope I make her proud,” Madhuri told the daily.

Sridevi, Bollywood’s first female superstar, died on February 24, 2018, in Dubai. She was 54. After her sudden death, her daughter Janhvi Kapoor announced through a post on Instagram that Madhuri had replaced her mother in Kalank.  During her conversation with the daily, Madhuri said that it is difficult to accept her death even after one year and the void that Sridevi had left behind will remain forever.

“We had known each other for many years and shared a warm equation. It was difficult for everyone in the industry to wrap their heads around her sudden loss. It is still hard to accept the truth. I don’t think anyone of us has still come to terms with her absence. We will always feel the void,” Madhuri said.

Cut to Abhishek’s film. If reports are anything to go by, Madhuri will star as a dancer in Kalank but the 51-year-old actress refused to divulge details, adding that her role is extensively different from that of her previous films. “It is hard to talk about the character without revealing too much. When people watch the movie, they will realise how different it is from what I have done in my other films like Devdas where I played Chandramukhi. The role that I have here is poles apart from that,” Madhuri added.

Kalank co-stars Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha apart from Madhuri Dixit.
