More power to all the victims coming forward, says AR Rahman on #MeToo movement

Musician AR Rahman has addressed the #MeToo movement that has encompassed the nation of late and said in a statement published on his verified Twitter profile that some of the names of victims and their perpetrators are shocking. "Been observing the #MeToo movement. Some of the names have shocked me... both the victims and their perpetrators. I would love to see our industry become cleaner and respectful of women,” Rahman said in his statement.

The musician, in fact, also supported the “victims”, who have been sharing their stories on social media as Rahman is of the opinion that the platform offers enough freedom to discuss the issue. “More power to all the victims coming forward... Social media offers great freedom for victims to speak up, however, we should be careful in creating a new internet justice system, in case it's misused,” he added.

Rahman’s statement on #MeToo arrived hours after his sister AR Raihanah spoke to a leading website about accusations of sexual harassment against veteran Tamil lyricist-poet Vairamuthu.

"Several women have told me about Vairamuthu. It is an open secret and a lot of people have faced it. I have not faced it personally. He has behaved with great dignity to me in the few meetings that we have had. How can I blame him? What right do I have? Whoever has experienced harassment must report it,” AR Raihanah told the website.

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has backed accusations of sexual harassment against Vairamuthu by alleging that she was asked to "cooperate" and visit him in a hotel but she refused.
