If looking at career in the long run, it’s important to replenish emotionally: Deepika

Deepika Padukone was last seen on the big screen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat that released earlier this year. Post the magnum opus the actress has neither been seen in any film nor has signed any project. She was supposed to star in a Vishal Bharadwaj’s directorial, a biopic based on gangster Sapna Didi alongside Irrfan but the project was put on the backburner since the latter was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour. During an interaction with ELLE India magazine, Deepika spoke about her sabbatical and her career in Bollywood.

Choreographer-director Farah Khan, who launched Deepika with Om Shanti Om in 2007, quizzed the superstar about her break. Farah asked the actress that while no one has taken a sabbatical for this long, during Happy New Year, she was doing triple shifts and five films in a year - so is the break a deliberate move? To this, Deepika said, “Yeah, because I feel like — and I like the word you used, brave — there always seems to be this pressure on women, especially in film, to do everything now, make hay while the sun shines.”

She further added, “And I think somewhere, I got fed up of people telling me that. I don’t look at my career like that. The perception that it is short-lived, so you have to make the most of it. If you’re looking at a career in the long run, it’s important to replenish emotionally, and that’s why this break is important.”

Apparently, Deepika is not the only actor to have taken a sabbatical. Abhishek Bachchan also took a two-year-long hiatus and is now back with his upcoming film Manmarziyaan that also stars Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal.

On the personal front, Deepika is all set to tie the knot with her longtime beau Ranveer Singh on November 20 this year in Lake Como, Italy. In an interaction with a leading portal when she was quizzed about her marriage dates, the actress kept mum and said, “You’ll Know soon.” However, Deepika and Ranveer are busy setting up their marital abode in Mumbai which they will move into once they tie the knot.
