M Karunanidhi's contribution to the Tamil film industry can never be forgotten

DMK Chief and Legendary Tamil Screenwriter, M Karunanidhi passed away recently. He was 94 and was suffering from age-related disorders from a long time.

M Karunanidhi suffered from urinary tract infection which was followed by a high fever. The filmmaker and much-loved leader was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on July 28. Despite several attempts by doctors, he couldn't be saved and left the mortal world on August 7, 2018 at 6:10 PM.

In his lifetime, M Karunanidhi had a stupendous political career of around 50 years. He was a supporter of the Dravid movement and served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu five times between the period of 1969 to 2011. If his work in politics got him a great amount of popularity, M Karunanidhi also did extremely well as a screenwriter in Tamil film industry.

The legend started his career as a screenwriter at the age of 20. His first film was Rajakumaari and it made him immensely popular. He went on to work for many films, out of which some of his most noted films were Manthiri Kumari, Parasakthi etc.

Parasakthi (1952) is one of the most respected works of M Karunanidhi which is also regarded as one of the most influential films of Tamil Cinema. His dialogues had a great impact on society and Parasakthi particularly broke several traditions at that time.

Even after entering politics, Karunanidhi continued to write and contributed to 75 Tamil films with his screenplay.

He brought several positive changes in the Tamil industry and one of them was Tax exemption. While being in power in 2006, he announced tax exemption for those Tamil films which had their title only in Tamil language. The rule doesn't exist anymore but it did influence the industry for a long time.

M Karunanidhi has left behind a legacy and will be missed for his work in politics, arts and literature. RIP.
