Papa Rishi kehte hain, but beta Ranbir is not yet ready

Rishi Kapoor, who’s got a big film in Mulk coming up next week, is said to be getting on son Ranbir Kapoor’s case to get married soon. “I want to spend time with my grandchildren before I am gone,” the veteran actor grumbles to anybody who cares to listen to his Bachelor Beta tales of woe. What in particular appears to be distressing Rishi is the fact that he, after a whirlwind courtship that began on the sets of Kabhie Kabhie in 1976, ended up marrying Neetu Sigh in 1980 when he was just 27. Ranbir is now 35 and despite the buzz about his dating Brahmastra co-star Alia Bhatt shows no signs of wanting to settle down. “It’s high time,” Rishi has been saying lately.

The Kapoors, Mama Neetu in particular, did not readily take to the son’s earlier loves. Especially Deepika Padukone for some reason. Katrina Kaif he was already living with so they had to keep their angst within themselves. But Alia seems to have met their approval. Rishi says, “Jo hai, woh hai, sabko pata hai. Ranbir can marry who he wants, we have no objection to that.” He understands the dating game in Bollywood all too well having set the trend himself in the 1970s. “Actors have blinkers on and are focused on their work. The only women they meet are the actresses. They don’t socialise much. That is the flip side of being in films.” Wonder why then there was this reluctance to accept Deepika. Ranbir, who is quietly and steadily going strong with Alia, does not appear to be ready for marriage yet. Rishi does not broach the subject with him but says that when Neetu does, Ranbir just brushes the question away. Wonder why.
