Shashanka would direct Veere Di Wedding sequel but Alankrita is a great choice

Today rumours had been a-swirl that not only was a sequel to Veere Di Wedding on the anvil, it would also be directed by Alankrita Srivastava. Now a spokesperson from the team has come forward to rubbish this speculation, saying there is no truth to the reports. “If at all a sequel is being planned, Shashanka Ghosh will be directing it. It's too soon to talk about the details,” is the official word on the project.

Veere Di Wedding, which had released on June 1 this year, went on to fare exceedingly well at the box office. Backed by Ekta Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor, the film had raked in Rs.80 crore at the Indian box office. The film revolves around four female companions who struggle to have some semblance of a normal life while dealing with umpteen expectations from their families and society in general. Broken relationships, friendship, forgiveness and acceptance were some of the primary themes touched up around the central idea of the power of female companionship.

Director Shashanka had felt this was the perfect opportunity to delve deeper into his idea of the modern Indian urban family. “Having grown up around really strong women, it was a story I really wanted to tell,” he explained, adding, “The film is very outspoken, urban and as far as tonality is concerned, it is fun. At the same time, it is also about dysfunctionality and dealing with mistakes.”

Despite Shashanka having done a good job, it is baffling why the name of Lipstick Under My Burkha director Alankrita Srivastava started to do the rounds for a possible Veere… sequel. Lipstick… starring Ratna Pathak Shah and Konkana Sen Sharma among others, was a far grittier film. A black comedy, it had featured four feisty women in small-town India trying to chase their little dreams and desires through secret acts of rebellion. The film had released in theatres after a huge showdown with the Central Board of Film Certificate (CBFC).

We have no bone to pick with Shashanka, but gosh, we would like to see what Alankrita would do with the power-packed cast comprising Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania!
