Watch: DCP Sanjay Patil gives update about Pearl V Puri’s judicial arrest under the POCSO Act, confirms the victim’s mother was the actor's co-star

Earlier today, Naagin actor Pearl V Puri was arrested under the POCSO Act after being accused of raping a minor girl. The actor has been taken into judicial custody for 14 days. The actor was presented at the Vasai court after which he was taken into judicial custody.

DCP, Sanjay Kumar Patil, MBVV Commissionerate, gave updates about the case. In a press conference, he said that the case was registered in Naigaon and the accused actor has been sent for medical examination. He said that the victim’s mother was his co-star and hence the victim used to frequent the sets of the television show. He also clarified that the victim’s age is less than 12 years and said that the case was filed by the victim’s father in Versova police station but was transferred to Waliv police station as per the Naigaon jurisdiction.

Pearl has been arrested under CR IPC 376 AB, r/w POCSO Act 4, 8, 12,19, 21. For the unversed, to deal with child sexual abuse cases, the Government brought in a special law, namely, The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in 2012. The Act is a comprehensive law to provide for the protection of children from the offences of sexual assault, sexual harassment and pornography while safeguarding the interests of the child at every stage of the judicial process by incorporating child-friendly mechanisms for reporting, recording of evidence, investigation and speedy trial of offences through designated Special Courts.
