Mumbai Magistrate court issues notice to Kangana Ranaut on Javed Akhtar's defamation complaint

On November 3, 2020, poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar had filed a criminal defamation complaint against Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut, for her allegations against him in regards to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, during a television interaction. The complaint filed before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Andheri stated that Kangana, during an interview to an English news channel, said Bollywood was run by mafia. She named Akhtar as one of the celebrities who were a part of the mafia.

Now, according to India Today, the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate, RR Khan, has issued a notice to Kangana after hearing reports of Advocate Jay Kumar Bharadwaj on behalf of Javed in the case. The notice is returnable on March 1, 2021.

The Juhu Police station has told the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate in Mumbai that offenses alleged against actor Kangana are made out for further investigation. The Magistrate court had ordered the Juhu police to file a report in December 2020 after hearing Javed and his lawyer Niranjan Mundargi. The court had further ordered Juhu police to file a report by January 18, 2020, however, they had sought time.

Akhtar had earlier alleged that the video of the interview was watched by millions on YouTube alone, thereby damaging his reputation.
