Arman Kohli assault case: Girlfriend Neeru withdraws complaint

Yesterday, controversial Bollywood actor Armaan Kohli was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Neeru Randhawa. Based on her complaint, Kohli had been booked under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and other relevant sections of the IPC. The actor was absconding since then and was arrested by the Mumbai Police from Lonavla on Tuesday, where he was found at his friend's farmhouse.

Kohli was brought to Mumbai on Tuesday evening from Lonavla by the Mumbai Police. He was produced in court for police custody today. However, in a surprise move, the complainant, who was in a live-in relationship with the 46-year-old Kohli for the past three years, withdrew the assault case. Within 20 hours of his arrest, when the actor was produced in the Bandra court, his lawyer Lakshmi Raman told the magistrate Pragati Yerlekar that the case between Armaan and his girlfriend Neeru Randhawa had been settled. The lawyer mentioned that "no purpose will be served with his custody."

Apparently, Kohli had already filed a petition before the Bombay High Court for "quashing of the complaint by mutual consent". Also, present in court were Kohli's father, film director Rajkumar Kohli and his childhood friend Babu bhai.

Around 1.10 in the afternoon, the public prosecutor told the court how the case was registered after Armaan beat up his girlfriend in a fit of rage. Neeru Randhawa was also present in court and wept throughout the course of the hearing. Armaan’s lawyer Raman said that the complainant did not want to take the case further. However, the prosecutor pointed out that the case was still at the remand stage and it was not right to bring in the complainant to the court at this stage.

Kohli's lawyer pointed out that most of the sections were bailable except for a section of non-bailable offence pertaining to possession of a weapon. His lawyer argued that according to the complaint, Kohli did not possess a weapon, claiming the section was added only to ensure that Armaan did not get bail.

With the court rejecting his bail application, Armaan has been sent to judicial custody till June 26.
