Delhi High Court dismisses PIL seeking stay on the release of PM Narendra Modi's biopic

The Delhi High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a stay on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s biopic, titled PM Narendra Modi and starring Vivek Oberoi in the titular role. PM Narendra Modi will release on its scheduled date on April 5 as the film doesn't violate code of conduct, the court said on April 1.

The biopic mired itself into controversy soon after it was announced. Veteran Congress leader Suresh Mishra urged the Election Commission (EC) to stop the release of the film last week. Mishra also accused Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyawardhan Singh Rathore of misusing his position to get the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC) clearance for the film and have it released during elections.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had also claimed that the decision to release the film ahead of the general elections in the country has a clear political motive. Meanwhile, the Gujarat Janchetna Party (GJP) also objected to the release of the film and wrote to the Election Commission, demanding a ban on the biopic, citing violation of the model code of conduct.
