Alia Bhatt’s Raazi becomes fifth highest opener of 2018

Kudos to the combo of director Meghana Gulzar and leading lady Alia Bhatt for powering the thriller Raazi to success at the box office. The film has achieved good results at the box office during its first weekend establishing Alia’s capacity to yet again shoulder a film and draw in audiences.

The film has already been declared a hit and could achieve the status of superhit if it fares well during the weekdays as well. After earning Rs.7.53 crore on the first day of its release, it garnered Rs.11. 30 crore on Saturday and Rs.14.11 crores on Sunday. This brings its total to Rs.32.92 crores in three days.

Raazi’s performance establishes it as the fifth highest opener of the year after Padmaavat, Baaghi 2, Raid and PadMan. With the film winning great reviews combined with word of mouth publicity, collections are pegged to rise. Also starring Vicky Kaushal, Rajat Kapur, Soni Razdan and Jaideep Ahlawat, Raazi is gripping audiences with its real-life tale of an ordinary Indian girl who becomes a spy.

The slice of life film, 102 Not Out continues to hold steady at the crease. This Umesh Shukla directorial starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor, has seen an upward swing over the weekend. While it garnered Rs.16.65 crore in its first week, week two saw it pull in Rs.1.85 crore on Friday, Rs.3.05 crore on Saturday, and Rs.4.30 crore on Sunday. This brings its total India business to Rs.36.90 crore. The film, which explores the love-hate relationship between a dreary 75-year-old son and his lively father aged 102, is expected to reach the Rs.40 crore mark.

Avengers: Infinity War became the biggest opener of this year in the domestic market, defeating films like Padmaavat and Baaghi 2. It is also the biggest Hollywood earner in the country and has crossed the Rs.200 crore mark. The superhero film is now heading towards the Rs.225 crore nett mark as it picked up an additional Rs.2-2.25 crore nett on its third Friday at the Indian box office.
