‘The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show’, says HBO’s programming head on fans’ request of reshooting ‘Game of Thrones’ final season

The final season of Game of Thrones broke a lot of hearts not only because it brought an end to an extremely loved and followed series but for the fact that many fans did not like the eighth season and how it ended. Now, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys opened up about the fan petition that demanded that the final season be re-shot. He was speaking at HBO’s TCA summer press tour event.

Talking about the petition he Bloys said, “There are very, very few downsides to having a hugely popular show, but one I can think of is when you try to end it, many people have big opinions on how it should end. The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show, but it wasn’t something that we seriously considered.”

He was also asked about HBO’s suggestions into the final season, to which he said that the contract between the network and the GOT showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss was “minimal”. He further said, “When a show is in its sixth, seventh or eighth season, by that point there’s usually a rhythm between showrunners and the network as to what they expect.” He also defended the series from the backlash that it received by saying that the original series dod not affect HBO’s thinking or process on its prequel. He also shed light on the status of the Game of Thrones prequel that will star Naomi Watts and said, “Shooting has wrapped, it looks really good. The cast was amazing; Jane (Goldman) and SJ (Clarkson) are busy in the edit bay.”

Bloys also cleared the air on why HBO did not submit actors’ nominations for Emmy Awards but still ended up amassing a record 32 Emmy nominations. He said that the network’s awards expert worked with all the showrunners of HBO on deciding who was going to be submitted. However, HBO “helped them and their representatives do it” when the actors decided that they will submit themselves.
