Priyanka Chopra and Meghan Markle have been great friends and once again showing that solidarity Priyanka defended her friend who has been keeping a low profile since the birth of her son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Meghan has been the frequent target of rumours and racist comments by the press ever since she started dating Prince Harry in 2016. The comments have not stopped even after the two married in 2018.
In an interview with an international daily, Priyanka spoke about her friend and what it’s been like watching her being critiqued in the press every now and then. She said, “I’ve seen that and it’s really unfortunate. But if there’s anyone who can handle it, it’s her.” She said that the unfair treatment of Meghan probably comes from the fact that many are unable to accept a biracial woman as a part of the Royal Family.
Calling out the racism, Priyanka said, “Of course it has to do with racism, it’s an obvious reason. But the beauty of Meg is that she’s been herself through all of this. A lot of people got to know her after everything (once she started dating Harry), but I knew her before and she’s the same chick. Now that she’s got a real platform, she talks about the same things she always did. We spent hours speaking about the difference that influence and dialogue can make to the world before this whole thing happened, so what you see now is authentically her. She’s always been the girl wanting to move the needle.”
Talking about what connects her and Meghan, Priyanka told the daily, “We just connected on how we see the world and as girls. Meghan is such a progressive, modern girl. She's what the world is today-a self-made woman who looks like each one of us. I mean, she's stunning. But she is so completely herself."
Priyanka’s comments came on the heels of months of rumours of a feud between the friends that started last December as Meghan who was pregnant with Archie gave the Bollywood actress’ wedding to American singer-actor Nick Jonas a miss. Priyanka did not attend the baby shower of Meghan that also sparked rumours. However, Priyanka refuted all these on a chat show and took to Instagram to congratulate Meghan and Prince Harry on the birth of their son Archie.
On Thursday, Priyanka and Nick were in London and a daily reported that the two visited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and presented gifts from Tiffany & Co. to baby Archie. However, Priyanka denied these reports and said that although the gift ideas are really great, she and her husband were in London because of work commitments. She took to Twitter and wrote, “While these are great gift ideas… this story is untrue, and I was actually in town for work. I hope whoever this ‘source’ is starts checking their facts more often.”
